Dog Flu Virus

Dog Flu Virus

What is it?
A canine influenza virus, and because dogs have no natural immunity it is highly contagious

How is it transmitted?
This flu can rapidly spread where large numbers of dog are gathered. Dogs can also catch the virus when directly contacting infected bodily fluids of other dogs, such as saliva & nasal secretions.

What are the symptoms?
Coughing, gagging, runny nose, fever and lethargy, much like any case of kennel cough

What is the treatment?
After examining your dog, your veterinarian will discuss treatment which may include
antibiotics for prevention of secondary bacterial pneumonia.

Can we prevent it?
There is no vaccine available at this time.  It may help to avoid any area where large numbers of dogs congregate.
